On March 1st kwartzlab held it’s first-ever Bob Ross Paint Along- a dream come true for me. I grew up watching Bob Ross on PBS, I think by then it was into re-runs (his show ended taping in 1994) he was one of those iconic figures who really influenced my perception of what a painter was. This guy was as cool as a cucumber. I would marvel at how his confident brush strokes would make landscapes come to life with “happy little trees” and rocks and water and beautiful fluffy clouds.
I’ve never quite considered myself a painter- though I seem to have my hand in every other aspect of art making. After discovering that our friends at i3 Detroit have hosted their own paint alongs, I was waiting for the day when we could host our own at kwartzlab. Enter Katherine Marchione. She contacted me via email, interested in showing her oil landscape paintings as our Artist of the Month! Perfect! We conspired together to plan the workshop. I ransacked KW for paintbrushes and pallet knives- and of course a wig for Katherine to wear during our class as a special touch.
All of our students were not “painters” by any means, and had never used oil paints before. I think we all finished the evening with something quite good! Many thanks to Katherine for your guidance and willingness to make this happen- it was a lot of fun!
