FeltingTeaser

On Sunday we held the final structured workshop in the Handmade Holiday Christmas Series, with a workshop all about needle felting. What exactly is needle felting you may ask…

It’s a process of mixing wool fibres together with a barbed needle to create a compacted shape. We used sheep wool (already carded and dyed) to create our figurines. We learned 4 basic shapes- a ball, a fold, a roll and a cone. These are the basic building blocks that you can use to create countless 3D forms. Take a look at what we came up with today!

The wool was purchased locally at Shall We Knit in Waterloo, and the needles were ordered online from a great shop called Living Felt.

DSC_2159Steph brought in her fancy 5 needle tool (green & beige Clover tool on top of the foam) for speedy work! A must-have when working on larger projects.

DSC_2179The start of something…didn’t really have a plan going in…I let it evolve quite unconsciously.

DSC_2187A great example of all the shapes we learned- a cone (the body), a fold (the ears), a ball (eyes and nose), and a roll (with pipe cleaner) for the tail! I hope your cat has fun with this little guy Sasha!

DSC_2202A more natural outdoorsy tree. Complete with snowy boughs and pine cones! Great use of the cone and fold technique to make this fluffy 3D tree.
